Many people seek to improve the grip of their carry guns by increasing the traction between the grip and their hand. Many believe the easiest way to obtain increased traction is to stipple the surface of polymer framed pistols. Handguns like the Glock, M&P, XD, etc. all feature polymer frames which make stippling a breeze. The downside is that by stippling your pistol you’re marring up a fairly expensive handgun and likely ruining the resale value.
There’s a better option.
Talon Grips manufactures adhesive grips in two flavors. One is a sandpaper like substance they call “particulate” and the other is a “rubber” texture which is less abrasive. Both improve the shooters ability to get a positive grip on their pistol. My friend and popular YouTuber Hickok45 routinely appears with Talon Grips on his pistols and in talking to him about the product, he swears by them.
I picked up a set of the particulate grips for my Springfield XDS 9mm. The grip is self adhesive and comes with simple and easy to follow instructions for installation. I was able to install my grip in less than 5 minutes after quickly glancing over the instructions. Once installed the grip feels very good, definitely more positive. Shooting the diminutive little pistol with the Talon grips helps to keep it planted in my grip which means I get less movement of the pistol in my hand during rapid fire strings.
The only downside to the particulate grips is that carrying a handgun such as the XDS inside the waistband can become very uncomfortable as the grips quickly rub a raw spot on any exposed skin they come into contact with. If you’re going to run the particulate grips on a pistol you plan to carry IWB, you’ll want to wear an undershirt to protect your skin. The other option is to try on a set of the rubber material grips which should remedy this issue. I’ve not had the chance to try out the rubber grips just yet, but I’ll order a set and report back.
At $17.99 for a set of grips I think you would be crazy not to give them a try before resorting to stippling your polymer carry gun. The grips are available for a wide variety of handguns and the AR15 rifle. Talon also sells their grip material by the sheet so you can apply it just about anything your heart desires.
